Details
New Orleans teens are often noted in news related to crime and education. Filtered through the perspective of the storyteller. In this 2-pt residency, the teens of All Souls Episcopal Church Community Center in the Lower 9 will devise a theater piece based on their own interviews with friends & family. In pt-2, 8&9-yr olds look at what stories children are used to sell.
Project Scope: Vision, Aim, & Objectives
Why this project is being done:
New Orleans youth show up in news as criminals or smiling faces of charter schools & playgrounds. Those pics promoting recovery show kids w/teachers, volunteers, athletes, but no families unless it's an ad. I seek to give them a space for their voice
Who or what this project would impact:
This project will impact the teens of the lower 9th ward and their families as they interview them regarding the images of violence in the news. It will also impact 8-10yr olds, as they discover how their images are being used to promote "recovery.
Project intends to address:
This project will address the children's awareness of how their images are being used to tell (and sell) stories in the news.
Project Timeline
The youth shared their living newspaper theater piece for their peers at LHA elementary at the culmination of the Fall Semester, December 2009.
