Details

Artists who are taking a DIY approach to their work are to be celebrated, but many artists don't have all the tools necessary to carry out these projects. A weekend workshop jam packed with information for artists on how to negotiate, do budgets, fundraise without writing grants, approach donors, how to articulate the content of your work, approaching venues, and much, much more.

Project Scope: Vision, Aim, & Objectives

Why this project is being done:
My current art practice is making life better for artists. I am committed to sharing everything I know about negotiating the art world on your own terms.
Who or what this project would impact:
30 Artists in New Orleans
Project intends to address:
I share my experience of being an artist both in the white box system as well as DIY projects in a variety of venues. I have also started and run nonprofit orgs, an artist run business, curatorial projects, publishing, public art and more.
Included or excluded:
I would like to distribute the Getting Your Sh*t Together (GYST) software to the workshop participants. It is downloadable for free trial at www.gyst-ink.com/buy/buyonline.php

Project Timeline

The workshop will take place for two days, but the information learned will help the artist for a lifetime.

Project Plan & Participants

Other people and/or organizations involved in this project:
I would like to include all organizations in New Orleans to get the word out to participants. If there are more than 30 artists who want to participate, I could repeat the workshops another time.
Plan for implementing this project:
The workshop will be tailored to the artists of New Orleans and work specifically with the projects the artists are working to complete.

Help or Additional Resources Needed

Materials needed (wish list):
Meeting space, digital projector, copies of handouts, participants
Help needed from other people:
Artists who collaborate, approach projects with a DIY approach, who address social practice issues. The idea is to come away with a very practical approach to their projects with a lot of new ideas on how to proceed.

That article is so great!

That article is so great! But aside from that breaking report let me impart new concern to you. If you have ever heard of the term the Mendoza Line, it's a baseball term. What the Mendoza Line means is a MLB player, that hasn't been hitting enough pitches. Often, the Mendoza Line is defined as a batting average of .200 or less (although the term's namesake, Mario Mendoza, has a career average of .215) and therefore, isn't hitting at a level that's justifiable to keep him in the MLB. Mario Mendoza was called up to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 70s as he was a defensive powerhouse at short stop, but was never though to be batting his weight – which is something most MLB players would put short term loans at least to be doing.
