Details

ArtSwamp began as the blog "Visual Arts New Orleans" in January of 2007 by Courtney Egan and Tim Best. It was initially an alternative critical forum for New Orleans visual contemporary arts, with writings solicited from artists. It evolved into Artswamp, with two main contributors, former Louisianian Laura Blereau, now a gallerist with Bitforms in New York, and Courtney Egan, a local artist.

Project Scope: Vision, Aim, & Objectives

Why this project is being done:
I want to provide an alternative critical forum for the visual arts, and provide a place where artists can contribute writings - an alternative portal to local / regional arts focusing on non-profit efforts off of gallery row.
Who or what this project would impact:
This blog impacts mainly visual artists living in New Orleans, Louisiana, and artists and art enthusiasts visiting New Orleans and the region.
Project intends to address:
A frequent complain of local artists is the paucity of strong, informed art criticism. This blog seeks to fill this gap, searching for artists interested in writing. This blog also intends to be a portal to alternative art projects.
Included or excluded:
This blog aims to be inclusive. Anyone can approach with a piece of writing or an idea to develop for the blog.

Help or Additional Resources Needed

Materials needed (wish list):
I need incentives for artists to write about art.
Help needed from other people:
I could use writers! I am seeking artists / writers who would be interested in becoming contributors. I could also use advice on html - making the blog more functional for people to use. I am also seeking advice on the pros and cons of ad space. An income could provide money that would then be used to pay writers. And, I need to spread the word about the blog with some pr.
